May 2009: WoWE Comes of Age, Announces Honors and Changes

Every year at our annual WINDPOWER luncheon, WoWE honors those women who are past, present and future movers and shakers in the industry. But this year, we also announced some important moving and shaking of our own.

Before an unprecedented audience of over 400 women and men, WoWE introduced 2009 Woman of the Year Karen Conover and Rising Star honoree Sarah Wright. We also heard a keynote address by Rachel Shimshak and welcomed seven Rudd Mayer Memorial Fellows.

We also made significant announcements about our organizational health and future. Launched five years ago by a handful of volunteers and donors, WoWE recognized 27 leading wind energy businesses and organizations as 2009 sponsors. The update on WoWE programs and progress included three milestones: our incorporation as an independent nonprofit, development of a new Board, and a national search for WoWE’s new Executive Director.

This moment of growth for WoWE will be celebrated by many signs of change: an expanded mentoring program, more local chapters, and enhanced leadership development opportunities.
